She obtained her PhD degree in Human Genetics from Stellenbosch University in 2003, became senior lecturer in 2006 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009.
She has been involved in various research projects investigating the possible underlying genetic cause of diseases and is currently investigating genes involved in iron homeostasis/metabolism in hereditary haemochromatosis, primary iron overload and oesophageal cancer. These are common illnesses which impact heavily on general health and health resources. She has published 20 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals (8 first author publications and 9 co-author publications), one book chapter and a review article in the field of human genetics and has trained numerous postgraduate students (18 HonsBSc, 10 MSc and 4 PhD). Prof Zaahl was also the recipient of the 2006 South African National Research Foundation "Women in Science" award, in the category "Best emerging young scientist", the South African representative at the International Council of Science (ICSU) meeting in April 2007, awarded the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) awards, category: Young Black Researcher, in 2009, winner of the National Order: Order of Mapungumbwe: Bronze (awarded by the president of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma) in 2010; and International Golden Key Honorary Member award in August 2010 Prof Zaahl is a very active member of the human genetics research community locally and abroad and is a frequent participant at national and international conferences and workshops. Genetic Counselor: Mardelle Schoeman
Mardelle Schoeman is a registered genetic counsellor. After completing a B.Sc degree and an Honours degree in Genetics at the University of Stellenbosch in 2002, she spent two years in the UK working and travelling. During this time she worked as a project manager for CPTM Ltd, an international organization, established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government to promote Science and Technology Management in the Commonwealth countries. She met a wealth of interesting and inspiring people, ranging from presidents of countries to CEO’s of major companies and gained some invaluable experience. She is still involved in CPTM’s activities. She returned home to further her studies and graduated with a Masters degree in Genetic Counselling with distinction from the University of Cape Town (UCT) at the end of 2007. After completing her internship, she was employed as genetic counsellor in the Division of Human Genetics (UCT), where she was involved in various research projects. She still has links with UCT on a part-time basis, particularly in the field of neurogenetics and also has a private practice. Laboratory Technician: Danielle da Silva
Danielle Da Silva completed an undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Stellenbosch University in 2008. In 2009 she did Honours in the Genetics Department which covered practical, theoretical and ethical aspects of genetic research. For her Honours thesis she examined the variation in a gene which is involved in drug metabolism in a South African population and co-authored a research paper on this topic.
Since 2010 she has been working on a Masters project, under the supervision of Prof Zaahl, which investigates the variation of gene expression in individuals with iron overload. Administration: Grant Harold
Grant studied at the University of the Western Cape, completing his course in 2010 qualifying with a BSc. degree in Biotechnology. In the course he has covered various modules including the methods used in biotechnology, protein structure and functioning, food and Agricultural biotechnology and bioinformatics, which included genetic analysis, and practical lab experience. These assist him in being embodied within the GENEdiagnostics family. Newsletters: Danielle Cowie
Danielle completed a degree in Human Life science with Psychology (cum laude) at the University of Stellenbosch in 2010 which included biochemistry, genetics, psychology, statistics and physiology. She is in the process of completing her Honours in Genetics also at Stellenbosch. She enjoys writing and helping others to understand the importance of genetics within our every evolving world.
